Doing our part to protect the Environment
Why?
Because of increased user demand, eXaNetworks
needed to upgrade our servers at our co-location facility. But
how do to in the most cost effective and
energy efficient manner?
How?
Instead of simply swapping out all the old servers
with new ones. We elected to recycled them instead. We replaced
the old motherboards with newer, energy efficient ones. Reusing
the cases, peripheral cards, and most importantly the 250 watt power
supplies.
We selected modern motherboards based on
dual Intel® Xeon multi-core, low voltage processors. These
CPUs have a TDP of only 30 watts! Enabling us to keep the original low wattage power supplies.
New servers typically consume up to 800 watts or more of power.
Servers that we not upgraded, were recycled or donated.
After the upgrade process, the power requirements have remained the
same, while computing capacity has increased 10 fold.
A side benefit, is that the recycled servers run cooler than before,
increasing the MTBF as well as reducing the cooling requirements for the
facility.
